“You remember the movie Clueless, where Cher had that program for her closet? That’s the kind of girl Mindy Lahiri would be.” How has the character’s style evolved since season one? “When we came back for season two, she was in Haiti, so we thought a casual, Island version of Mindy. Mindy on the show is a little hipster, fashionista,” says Perez. Mindy in real life is a little edgier, a little more street. “Mindy Lahiri spends more time putting together an outfit than Mindy Kaling does. The wig showed that off, so I really played it up.” We took away the layers and the collars, we did boat necklines, and we used pieces that showed off her beautiful neck. I personally was a big fan of the short hair, it gave us a whole new way to dress her. “Sadly…you won’t really be seeing that short hair anymore. The designer has also tweaked the character’s costumes to complement her short hair, which will soon grow back thanks to the magic of television.

STF: What I love about the show and the costumes is that they show off a beautiful, real figure we don't usually get to see a lot of in television.“I will be up at 1 in the morning and I’ll get an e-mail from Mindy that says, ‘Did you see this great outfit at ShopBop?’ She loves, loves, loves clothes,” says Salvador Perez ( Pitch Perfect, Veronica Mars, Castle),who notes that costume fittings with Kaling - who is also the series creator - can last up to four hours. The thing is, being a costume designer for as long as I have been, most actresses you see are size zero and two-even if you see a four, that's odd. With Mindy it's really about finding silhouettes that flatter her and embracing her size. We never have a conversation like, "Let's hide this." Instead we try to flatter her. I really think the character in and of itself isn't cookie cutter. She has some insecurities, but she's confident. She'll make references to her size and her figure all the time.

STF: Are there things that real-life Mindy would never wear that you've tried to talk TV Mindy into trying? How open is she to that stuff? Castellano says to her, "You know what would look great? If you lost 15 pounds." You know that happened to her somewhere along the way, that it was drawn from real life, and it was really brave of her to put that in there.

SP: It's been a discovery process with her-there are things I try to encourage her to wear, and she will try them on and say, "Oh, you were right!" I know how to fit clothes because of my background in construction.
